WHAT IS AN “ECO-FRIENDLY WEB DESIGNER”?

By BERNARDUS.BIZ

Simply put, an eco-friendly web designer is a website designer that reduces CO2 Emissions to an absolute minimum in all he or she does. The Internet has become the world’s chief responsible for energy usage; and there fore CO2 Emissions and, in the opinion of Scientists, Global Warming. Consequently we think that those at the root of it, carry an extra liability. The liability to spread awareness, promote a “green” internet, and reduce the dangers themselves.

Up to only a few years ago, Transport was the biggest ‘evil-doer’. Transport, indeed, is huge. Not only for your transport, to and from work, or on holiday, but much more the transport of the products you consume.

It goes without saying that everything around you, had to get to that place. Much less obvious is for example everything you eat. That simple bag of salad in your refrigerator can have travelled a long way. From Kenya for example, where it consumed 50 liters of water, to grow and to be washed, before it is shipped, packed elsewhere, shipped, carried over half the world, then from an airport to distribution centres and from distribution centres to your local supermarket. Needless to say that also all tiny steps in between - the usage of plastic (oil derived), the electricity for coolers and air-conditioning in the supermarket, your refrigerator – consume electricity, and thus, since ours is very much an oil based economy, create burning of carbon fossils.

In 2007 Transport was overtaken in this role by… The Web.
That means that instead of one big polluter, we now have two – with all the consequences as we see them today.

How can a phenomenon as the Internet play such an important role? The answer exists of very many elements. Just already take a look at how an internet connection at your home might have changed your daily agenda. It used to be so that families had one television, with programs that ended before midnight. Now we are online any time, you can read your newspaper at any time you wish, and the world’s millions of chat boxes just never stop. Obviously nobody is chatting at 2 am while sitting in the dark: the radio is playing, the lights are lit, coffee is being made, etc. Perhaps even the TV is on as well. You seem to be alone, but do not forget the literally tens of millions of people like you, glued to their desktop or laptop.

Eco Friendly Hosting

Any website or webpage is hosted on a server. It is from this server that the information is pulled. Those servers are located in server parks, with 24/24 hour security. Especially in the USA those server parks have become humongous, enormous buildings with tens of thousands of servers running day and night – consuming the electricity of a whole town or city. With eco-friendliness slowly becoming a topic with many consumers, there are now server parks that switch to eco-friendly energy, by means of using solar panels or wind- or watermills. By hosting your website on a server in such an eco-friendly environment, you reduce the energy that is spent just in order to keep your website online.
